Inequity in Transport: The Problem with Auto Hegemony
نویسنده
چکیده
It is well known that ubiquitous use of the automobile has become a threat to the environment. However, humans have also become negatively affected by the proliferation of the current auto-centered culture, particularly low-income minority groups. Those who have access to a vehicle have a great advantage in our society while those who do not suffer in many ways. The current style of American transportation planning virtually ignores the needs of those who do not have access to a personal vehicle. Since low-income minority groups are disproportionately represented in this category, traditional transportation planning could be observed as structural discrimination. In recent history, inadequate appropriation of funds towards public transportation in the United States has been mostly to blame for the lack of safe, efficient travel options of those who do not have access to a car. Medical ailments have been linked to the increased frequency with which low-income minorities live in areas with high vehicular ambient air pollution, even though these individuals are less likely to produce that pollution. As private car hegemony is globalizing, poor minority groups in developing nations are at risk of experiencing these same phenomena as more and more of their valuable agricultural land is starting to be usurped for the purposes of building road infrastructure for the automobile. Amid all the problems our society is facing, a new paradigm shift towards equitable and sustainable transportation planning is desperately needed. Springs: Inequity in Transport 199

A New Framework for Hegemonic Analysis of Monetary Policy: The Case of Iran
Monetary policy rule might be helpful to avoid the problem of time inconsistency provided there is a commitment to the rule. The commitment is the ability of a government to bind future policies. However, it doesn’t include intrinsic motivations. Therefore, hegemony, which includes both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, better solves the problem of time inconsistency. In this paper, we expl...
متن کاملAn Investigation and Comparison of Road Transport Indicators among the Provinces of Iran
One of the major obstacles in the process of national development, is the disruption in regional balance construct. As has been noted in some studies the existence of regional inequity leads to domination of some regions to surrounding regions and causing political and economic challenges in developing countries. And given that transportation is one of the components of region, undoubtedly equi...
متن کاملA Grey Transportation Problem in Fuzzy Environment
In classical transport models, it is always assumed that parameters such as the distance from each supply node to each demand node or the cost of transferring goods from one node to another, as well as quantities such as supply and demand are definite and definite amounts. But in real matters, considering these assumptions is not logical. On the other hand, there may be a real problem in mathem...

متن کاملEnumeration of Dominant Solutions: An Application in Transport Network Design
A One-Dimensional Binary Integer Programming Problem (1DB-IPP) is concerned with selecting a subset from a set of k items in budget constraint to optimize an objective function. In this problem a dominant solution is defined as a feasible selection to which no further item could be added in budget constraint. This paper presents a simple algorithm for Enumeration of Dominant Solutions (EDS) and...
